What to Wear to a Nigerian Wedding

A Nigerian wedding is rarely just one event, there's the traditional ceremony, the white wedding, sometimes a reception that runs late into the night. Each calls for a slightly different read on the same brief: polished, colourful, and comfortable enough to last the day.

For a traditional ceremony, richer fabrics and structured silhouettes read best, think aso-oke-adjacent tailoring, jewel tones, and a fit that holds its shape through hours of standing, dancing, and photographs. Avoid all-white or anything too close to the aso-ebi colours unless you've confirmed them with the family.

For the white wedding reception, a strong corporate-adjacent set or an occasion dress in a considered colour works well, this is a moment to look elegant without upstaging the bride. Skip anything overly bridal: no all-white, no full tulle skirts, no veil-adjacent headpieces.

Whichever event, comfort matters more than people admit. Choose a fit you can sit, dance, and eat in without adjusting every ten minutes, our Fit Notes field exists exactly for this, so we can adjust before it ever gets to you.

If you're not sure where a specific piece lands, our stylists are one message away, use the chat button on any page, or start with the Occasion edit for Wedding Guest.
